CD Ripping

Transferring songs from CDs to your computer is called "ripping." The music on CDs is in files like Wave Files (which are the standard uncompressed audio files), but they are called CDA (Compact Disc Audio). So you cannot just drag them to your computer and copy them to MP3 files.

To RIP your songs you'll need ripping software. FREE RIP is a free software download that allows you to copy any or all the tracks on any CD and save them to your computer as MP3s.

I know this can get a little complicated for first timers so I am going to go very, very slowly.

The very first thing you need to do is go to this site -

Free RIP

1. Scroll down until you see the Download NOW.

2. Click on it and download the application.

3. It will ask if you want to save it or run. Choose RUN.

4. After a moment (after it does it's thing) it will ask again if you want to run this software. Click RUN.

5. Click NEXT. Click I ACCEPT THE AGREEMENT and then click NEXT.

6. It will ask if you want to install their SEARCH BROWSER TOOLBAR. I UNCHECKED it. I do not need any more stuff on my computer. After you uncheck it (or not) Click NEXT.

7. You will see a box that says - SELECT DESTINATION LOCATION. Click NEXT.

8. Now you will see a box that says - SELECT STARTUP MENU FOLDER. Click NEXT.

9. You will be given a choice of a DESKTOP ICON. Choose YES. I left the QUICK LAUNCH ICON unchecked.

10. The last box will say INSTALL. Click that INSTALL button.

11. After the install it will ask if you want to launch it now. Choose NO. We are not ready for the CD Ripper yet.

Take a look at your desktop. You should see an icon that looks similiar to this.

You can name your songs in the list - makes it much easier when you upload your songs. Just left click the track name. You will see that the name is highlighted. This is giving you the opportunity to name your song. Type in the name of your song. DO NOT use spaces in the name - this is VERY IMPORTANT! Hit Enter to complete the re-naming process.

You also have the option to list the name of the album, the artist and a few other things. That is completely optional. However, if you choose to fill out this information another folder with the album name will be created on your desktop and this is where your ripped music will end up. That's cool ... just remember that is where your MP3 music files are because you are going to need them later.

LEFT CLICK your mouse on top of the small photo to see an enlarged view

Now it is time to RIP our music! Look at the top left of the box. See where it says RIP? I've highlighted the RIP area in the enlarged photo.
